Who allotment reached

The dividing line is whether allotment reached you, which mostly tracked soil quality and settler pressure. Language family and how hard a people fought had little to do with it. The western Apache hold two of the larger reservations in the country, San Carlos (~1.8m acres) and Fort Apache/White Mountain (~1.6m acres) in Arizona, plus Mescalero and Jicarilla in New Mexico, all intact and never allotted because southwestern Apache country was mountain and desert with poor farmland and low settler demand; the Navajo, same family, hold the largest reservation in the US, while the KCA reservation sat on arable prairie and was opened by lottery in 1901.

The Apache who came out worst are the ones pulled out of the Southwest entirely: the Chiricahua, Geronimo's people, imprisoned in Florida and Alabama then held at Fort Sill. Released in 1913 with no land of their own, some took Mescalero allotments and the rest became the Fort Sill Apache Tribe, with a very small Oklahoma land base and an ongoing fight over land in New Mexico.
