Comanche Nation

Federally recognized, headquartered in Lawton, Oklahoma, ~17,000 enrolled citizens, with their own government, courts, police, gaming and other enterprises, Comanche Nation College, and a language program. Confined to a southwestern Oklahoma reservation after the Red River War of 1874–75, with Quanah Parker as the last major holdout and afterward the most prominent figure in the transition. Governed jointly with the Kiowa and Apache for decades before separating and adopting their own constitution in 1967.

The language is the fragile part: Numunu Tekwapu has very few remaining first-language speakers, nearly all elderly. Best-known chapter of that story is the seventeen Comanche Code Talkers of WWII, who landed at Utah Beach on D-Day.
